About the Supreme Court of New York
In New York State, the Supreme Court is the highest level trial court. Unlike most other State Supreme Courts, in New York, the Supreme Court is not the highest court in the state. That is the New York State Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court hears civil cases involving claims above a certain monetary amount, including contract disputes, divorces, actions sounding in negligence, medical malpractice, labor law, election law and numerous other civil matters. The court also has jurisdiction over "Article 78 proceedings" which involve disputes over the actions or decisions of New York State officials and agencies. In several counties, including Albany, the Court also has a Commercial Division.
